Colleges are redesigning transitions to college to reach and support students, especially those furthest from opportunity. CLP hosted Redesigning with Transitions in Mind: A Guided Pathways Webinar, the first in a series of statewide webinars exploring how colleges and their partners are reimagining transitions to college — such as early onboarding, bridge programs, and dual enrollment — within the Guided Pathways framework.

First we heard from partners in dual enrollment, Bakersfield College and McFarland High School. Of nearly 37,000 students at Bakersfield College, over 7,000 are dually enrolled high school students — like McFarland student Josh Rizo. Josh talked about his past experience with dual enrollment and how his college and high school classes have changed in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Bakersfield approaches dual enrollment as a natural extension of Guided Pathways into high school, allowing students earlier access and more support for early college.
Next Chaffey College walked us through how they have created an entire virtual college in response to the COVID-19 crisis, with a special focus in transitioning students to the online campus and creating community in a virtual space, including this Online Tool Kit in an open-access Canvas shell. Chaffey had already started experimenting with offering classes and support services in a streamlined, virtual hub that recreated a campus experience for online students. An Improving Online CTE Pathways Grant allowed them to lay the foundations of what would become their online campus.
