The Black Print: Creating the Conditions for Equitable Access and Achievement through Dual Enrollment

November 3, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm

Umoja Conference breakout session: Dual enrollment can serve as a powerful lever for racial equity in access and achievement in higher education. For this to be realized for minoritized populations in general and African American students, in particular, must be intentional, systematic and strategic in creating the necessary structural and cultural conditions for equitable opportunities and outcomes. Framing and implementing dual enrollment in the context of Umoja practices including, but not limited to, student centeredness, culturally responsive pedagogy and practice, and community-building. In alignment with existing and emerging initiatives and reforms such as academic acceleration, Guided Pathways, Rising Scholars, and Vision 2030, these coordinated and integrated efforts, could represent the means by which institutional transformation impacting outcomes for our African American students can manifest.

This session aims to provide practitioners with an understanding of the dual enrollment landscape in California and the broader national context. Additionally, it will explore ideas, strategies and approaches, in conversation with practitioners, for intentionally integrating dual enrollment programs within existing Umoja programs where conditions permit.
